Encircled by mountains and straddling the river Salzach, the beautiful Austrian city of Salzburg has a dramatic setting that matches its own baroque splendor. Baedeker describes it as "both architecturally and scenically one of the most beautiful cities in Europe." Visitors from all over the world flock to this “Small Paradise” throughout the year, not just for the enchanting variety of stunning,  unspoilt mountainsides,  the Salzkammergut lake district, and the beauty of the “Baroque Jewel” of the old town itself—they come to trace the footsteps of Mozart in this magical destination.  And in late summer, they come for the Salzburg Festival.

The Salzburg Festival was inaugurated on August 22, 1920, when Hugo von Hofmannsthal's morality play Jedermann (directed by Max Reinhardt) was premiered on the Domplatz. Since that time, the festival has established itself as one of the most important for opera, drama and “serious music”.

The 2011 Festival features two new operatic productions: Verdi’s Macbeth, conducted by Riccardo Muti, and Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten, directed by Christof Loy with Christian Thielemann at the podium. The programme is completed with a returning Claus Guth production of Le Nozze di Figaro, a concert by the Vienna Philharmonic (Mahler, Berg) under the direction of Pierre Boulez, an all-Mozart concert at the Mozarteum and a recital of Schubert piano sonatas by Mitsuko Uchida.

We will attend these six performances and tour the stunning countryside, visit Hellbrunn Palace and Hohensalzburg Fortress, and tour Mozart’s residences and other historic sites of interest. And as always, we enjoy fine cuisine and wine throughout.

Our hotel, The Bristol, is incomparable in Salzburg. Built for aristocracy in 1619, and converted into a hotel in 1892 it counts among the best addresses in the long history of the city and has enjoyed the patronage of Emperor Franz Josef and Sigmund Freud. We are welcomed as family in this superb hotel.
