There is an intimate quality to the itinerary of this voyage. The charm of small island ports and seaside villages, the eloquent silence of ancient sites – these are all best appreciated from a small, private cruise ship with a small assembly of like-minded travelers.

In an intimate group, you have the freedom to explore at your own pace. You can stroll or pause, take in impressions or focus on details, chat with residents or just spend the afternoon in a café or public square, watching people go about their daily lives. Weave your way through the broken columns of the ancient Greek colony of Selinunte; explore the fine archaeological museum at Lipari, a charming harbor town on the largest island in the Aeolian archipelago; marvel at the intricate geometrical carving on the gargantuan stones of Malta’s megalithic temples. Take time to sample some of Sicily’s unique dishes and local olive oils.

Of course, going hand-in-hand with the intimacy of this itinerary is the grandeur of the civilizations it encompasses. Some of the greatest civilizations of the ancient world – Greek, Phoenician, Roman – arose along the shores and on the islands of the Mediterranean. The imprints of all of these cultures can be found on Sicily, which also flourished under Arab rule and became a luminous center of culture under Norman kings in the 12th century. You will come to know those diverse cultures, not as part of a noisy throng, but on private excursions; not as one of a haphazard crowd of tourists, but as one of a small group of kindred spirits.

For this itinerary, as for all of our voyages, we have sought out places that the mega-cruise ships ignore or cannot access. Each stop offers unusual and unexpected opportunities. In many ports, you will have the option to choose among several excursions, at no additional cost, or to go off on your own. We have designed an itinerary, but you have the freedom to design your travel experience.
