Part 3: Lovers Forsaken, Rejected, and Abandoned

Some of the most heart-wrenching scenes in opera involve a lover forsaken or rejected. This lecture explores the theme of failed love in opera, examining the contours of love lost and lovers scorned. Operas to be discussed include, but are not limited to, Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Cosí fan tutte, Verdi’s La Traviata, and Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer.
